The first South African pears will land on Friday 4 February, officially starting the season! Just like last season, we import the pears ourselves, so we deliver directly from the source. We start the season with Williams Bon Chretien pears, followed by the Packham pears. In a few weeks, we will also receive Abate, Rosemarie, and Flamingo pears. But what is the difference between all these pears, and which type suits you best?
Williams Bon Chretien pears
We kick off the season with the Williams pear. This pear does not originate from South Africa, but America. The hand pear has a sweet taste and white and strongly fragrant flesh. They are prone to bruises and spots, so handle them with care. Little can be said about the shelf life because it strongly depends on the ripeness of the fruit.
Packham pears
The Packham pear is one of the crunchy kind, with a short and round shape. The pear has a green color and turns pale yellow as it matures. The flesh is extremely juicy and has a nutmeg aroma. The pear is suitable as a hand pear, but can also be used in hot dishes by poaching or stewing!
Abate Fatel pears
While the Williams and Packham pears are small and round, the Abate is one of the taller figures. It has a banana-like shape, with a green color. As he matures, an orange blush develops on his skin. Due to the firm flesh, the pear is ideal for use in various dishes.
Rosemarie and Flamingo pears
The Rosemarie pear looks as beautiful as it sounds. The pear has a beautiful appearance, with a bright red blush (on the sunny side) on the green skin. The pear is small in size, as it is only 5-7 centimeters tall. The Flamingo pear is a cross between the Forelle pear and the Bon Rouge. The colorful skin and firm flesh make the pear a great addition to salads.
